American composer. Aiming to become a pianist, he studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin in 1903, taking lessons in piano, composition, and counterpoint. He returned to the United States in 1907, working as the head of music at Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York, and as a composer in New York.
Griffes's lieder are German Romantic in style, showing the influence of Brahms and Richard Strauss. However, around 1911–1917, he experimented with Impressionism and also wrote works with an Oriental flavor. Works influenced by Japan include the pantomime Shojo and Five Poems of Ancient China and Japan.
