1. Country of Origin and Main Activities
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, he moved to France at the age of three. He obtained French nationality.
2. Education and Mentors
At the age of 11, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, studying harmony with Dubois, piano with Decombes, and composition with Massenet.
3. Works
At the age of 13, he published his first songs based on Hugo's poems. In addition to elegant songs, he composed theatrical music, including operettas, which were the culmination of his strong interest in theater.
4. Activities Other Than Composition
From 1934, he was responsible for writing music criticism for Le Figaro. In 1945, he was appointed director of the Paris Opéra. He conducted many works by Mozart, for whom he had a strong admiration. Hahn, whose works largely consisted of vocal pieces, sometimes sang while accompanying himself on the piano in salons.
5. Associated Figures
Through salons, he interacted with Marcel Proust, author of À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), and Sarah Bernhardt, an actress of the Comédie-Française who excelled in tragedies such as La Dame aux Camélias (The Lady of the Camellias).
