A German composer who was also active as an organist. Karlstedt's catalog of works lists nearly 300 compositions. Among the approximately 140 instrumental works, all but about 20 chamber music pieces are for keyboard instruments. Among these, the approximately 90 works for organ include many genres such as toccatas, preludes, fugues, and chaconnes.
He studied with his father, who was an organist, and became an organist himself. He served as organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck, a free Hanseatic city in northern Germany, and married the daughter of his predecessor, Tunder. He also inherited the tradition of church concerts known as 'Abendmusiken' (Evening Music) and further developed these performances. Mattheson, Handel, and J.S. Bach visited Buxtehude in their youth.
