Nigel Sabin studied composition in Australia and New York. After graduating from the University of Adelaide, he obtained his doctorate from the University of Queensland. He has received numerous awards and research grants from various organizations, including the Australia Council, and his instrumental works are regularly broadcast in Australia and performed by orchestras abroad.
Sabin's music is influenced by American minimalism, and is characterized by traditional harmonic language and buoyant rhythms. His sometimes humorous music has been described in various ways, such as "amiable and stylish," "evoking poetic sentiment," and "capable of converting those hostile to contemporary music."
He is also actively involved as a clarinetist, performing widely in Australia as a soloist or orchestral musician. Furthermore, he formed the chamber ensemble Perihelion, developing a unique repertoire rich in Australian-flavored postmodern sensibility.
From 1995 to 1996, he served as composer-in-residence with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, composing numerous orchestral works, including his first symphony. Since 2000, he has resided in Sydney, and is currently increasing his focus on piano music.
