Born in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, China. After graduating from Southwest Music College in 1954, he began teaching at the same institution. In 1956, he participated in a seminar for composers from the former Soviet Union at the Central Conservatory of Music, where he was influenced by Russian classical music. Subsequently, he became a professor of composition at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. He has 123 published works.
