Born in Japan. His father was Guo Moruo, a pioneer of modern Chinese literature and history. He began studying piano at the age of five, under the tutelage of Hiroshi Tamura, a pianist and professor of piano at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1950, he enrolled in the piano department of the Central Conservatory of Music, where he studied under Zhu Gongyi. He came to Japan in 1978 and engaged in composition and performance activities. In 1989, he returned to the Central Conservatory of Music and served as a professor in the piano department.
