Born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China, he was a composer, pianist, and music educator. In 1952, he entered the Affiliated Middle School of the Central Conservatory of Music, majoring in piano. In 1958, he enrolled in the piano department of the Central Conservatory of Music. After graduation, he taught at the same institution and composed a large number of piano works. In 1982, he studied abroad at the University of Melbourne in Australia, where he studied contemporary composition. He subsequently immigrated to Australia.
