A German-born composer, conductor, and writer who was primarily active in Sweden. He moved to Stockholm after being invited by a Swedish student he met through a literary circle. He worked on the opera Ianis of Carthage, based on a plot suggested by the King.
He studied law at the universities of Mainz, Erfurt, and Göttingen. After moving to Stockholm, he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and also served as acting conductor of the Royal Court Orchestra. Kraus's letters and correspondence were collected by Silfverstolpe, a diplomat and friend of Kraus, and are preserved at Uppsala University.
