An American violinist born in Vienna. He began studying the violin at an early age, entered the Vienna Conservatory, and graduated from the Paris Conservatoire at a young age. In 1899, he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic. Thereafter, he continued his international performing career. He also visited Japan in 1923.
He moved to the United States in 1939 and obtained permanent residency in 1940. His performances, described as full of humanity, were highly popular. He retired from the stage in the late 1940s, with his final performance at Carnegie Hall.
In addition to operettas and short pieces for solo violin, he also composed cadenzas for concertos by Beethoven and Brahms, and arranged works by other composers such as Dvořák and Tartini.
