A Hungarian composer born in Romania. He studied piano and composition in Timișoara, western Romania. In 1946, he enrolled at the Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary, obtaining Hungarian citizenship in 1948. He studied composition with Veress and Farkas, piano with Kadosa, and chamber music with Weiner.
In 1957, he attended composition classes with Milhaud and Messiaen at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1971, he studied in Berlin on a scholarship.
From 1967, he served as a professor at the Liszt Academy of Music (initially in the piano department, later in the chamber music department).
