An American composer. He studied with Messiaen at the Berkshire Music Center and with Hindemith at Yale University. He also studied with Boulanger in Paris, supported by a Fulbright Grant. After returning to the United States, he worked at the University of Chicago. He was awarded the Koussevitzky Foundation First Prize and the Brandeis University Creative Arts Award. His compositions were commissioned by organizations such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Library of Congress. He is also known as a pianist who performed works by Ives, Boulez, Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern.
