British composer. His output largely comprises songs and choral works. Some of the poetry he set to music was by his two friends, Sir Mordaunt Currie and Walter de la Mare.
He studied history and music at Trinity College, Cambridge University. During his time there, he met Dent, Charles Wood, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. After graduation, he earned a living as a teacher. It was after the performance of Crossings, a play written by Walter de la Mare for Gibbs's school at Gibbs's suggestion, that Adrian Boult, who conducted the work, encouraged him to become a composer. Taking this advice, Gibbs studied composition with Vaughan Williams and conducting with Boult at the Royal College of Music. He later instructed students at the same college. He was awarded a doctorate by his alma mater, Cambridge University, and also served as Vice-President of the British Federation of Music Festivals.
