Rosenhain was born on December 2nd in Mannheim, a city in southwestern Germany, as the eldest son of a Jewish banker. He had one younger brother, who also pursued a career in music alongside his elder brother, Jakob. Thanks to his education-minded father's consideration, Jakob initially studied with local teachers and quickly displayed musical talent. Eventually, he studied under Jakob Schmitt (1803–1853), the younger of the renowned pianist and composer Schmitt brothers, and by the age of ten, he was able to perform in public.
