A German composer. Initially intending to study theology, he attended the University of Königsberg, but later switched to music, studying under Stern and Bülow at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. He received formal music education starting at the age of 17. Even during his studies, his self-composed piano concertos were well-regarded. With a recommendation from Reinecke, he served as an organist and choir conductor in Winterthur, while also pursuing musical activities as a pianist and composer. In later years, he suffered from tuberculosis and dedicated himself to teaching music and composing. It was around this time that he began writing music criticism for newspapers. His representative works include the operetta Der Widerspenstigen Zähmung (The Taming of the Shrew) (1872), the Piano Concerto in B-flat Major, Op. 18, and the Piano Quartet, Op. 6, which was dedicated to Brahms.
