Biography
Born in Hiroshima, he graduated from the École Normale de Musique de Paris after completing his graduate studies at Kunitachi College of Music. From 1968 to 1976, he studied under Saburo Takata, Yuzuru Shimaoka, M. Bitsch, and O. Messiaen. He currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Music at Elisabeth University of Music, and as Vice Chairman of the Hiroshima Symphony Association. He is a member of the Japan Society for Contemporary Music and the Japan Federation of Composers, and Chairman of Composers in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, as well as a member of the Orchestra Project.
His notable achievements include:
- In 1992, his work Wind of Margins, for two pianos was selected for the 2nd International Composition Competition.
- In 1998, he received the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival Excellence Award for Layers of Color, for orchestra (CD: Brain).
- His Reminiscence of Hermitage, for solo shakuhachi (score and CD: Japan Federation of Composers) was selected for the ISCM-ACL (co-hosted by the International Society for Contemporary Music and the Asian Composers League) World Music Days 2007 Hong Kong.
- His Gyō for Flute and Biwa was selected as an invited work for the Music from Japan Festival 2007 (US performance).
- His works Wind Atoll, for solo recorder and Wind of Kalachakra, for voice and piano were well-received at the Korean Contemporary Music Festival (Seoul, etc.).
His works have been frequently performed in France, the United States, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and other locations. In recent years, many of his orchestral works, including Symphonic Poem, Three Chapters on Hiroshima and Ota River (CD: Brain), Endless Landscape, Wind Atoll, Currents, and Wind of Margins, have been premiered by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, and Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.
He has also lectured on topics such as “Japanese Contemporary Music after 1945” at the invitation of institutions including the University of Santo Tomas (Philippines), Sichuan Conservatory of Music (China), Korea National University of Arts (South Korea), Chinese Culture University (Taiwan), and Shanghai Conservatory of Music (China).
In 2005, Wind Atoll, for piano, in 2006, Female Chorus Suite “Ai ga”, and in 2007, Male Chorus Suite “Hikari no Kiri”, among other scores, were published by Mother Earth Co., Tokyo.
