Born in Velvary on June 26, 1747, Leopold Koželuch was a Bohemian composer, pianist, music teacher, and publisher. He achieved success with ballets and pantomimes staged in Prague from 1771 to 1778, which led him to abandon his law studies and dedicate himself to composition. In 1778, he moved to Vienna, where he gained renown as a pianist, composer, and teacher. His influence as a pianist and piano teacher, in particular, was very strong. In 1784, he also founded a music publishing house, which later became Musikalisches Magazin. Following the ascension of Emperor Franz II, he was appointed Court Kapellmeister in 1792, a position he held for the rest of his life.
Koželuch is considered the foremost figure in 18th-century Czech music. Most of his works are piano music, including charming piano sonatas, piano trios, and piano concertos. He also arranged Scottish, Irish, and Welsh folk songs.
