Born in Kyoto in 1953. Graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School, Composition Department in 1980. He studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Teizo Matsumura, and Toshiro Mayuzumi. His Sinfonia Liturgica was selected for the Japan Symphony Foundation Composition Award. In 1983, his Hannya Rishū Symphony won first prize at the World Buddhist Music Festival Competition. In 1987, his String Quartet won first prize at the International C.M.v. Weber Chamber Music Competition. He received the Todo Music Award in 1988. In 1991, his Symphonic Karma received the 1st Akutagawa Award for Music Composition. In 1992, his Fūrai for Sho and Orchestra received a Special Award from Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa. He received the Kyoto New Artist Award in 1993. In 1997, his two-CD set Symphonic Karma / Yutaka Takahashi Orchestral Works (DENON) was selected as a 'Special Choice' by Record Geijutsu magazine. His works have been performed in numerous countries, from Europe to North and Central/South America, among others. After a long tenure teaching at Tokyo University of the Arts and its affiliated high school, he is currently a Specially Appointed Professor at Nagoya College of Music and a Visiting Professor at Osaka University of Arts.
