A composer and pianist born in New Orleans and who died in Brazil. His re-evaluation as a composer progressed in the 20th century, and he is now recognized as one of the important American composers of the 19th century.
Born the son of a merchant, he showed musical talent early on, and by 1836, he was performing as a church organist. From 1842, he traveled to Europe and began his career as a pianist, making his official debut in 1849. He gained popularity throughout Europe and returned home in 1853. However, success in his home country proved difficult, and he increased his concert appearances due to financial reasons. It is said that he gave 1100 recitals by 1865. In September of the same year, he left America and never returned.
