This three-movement piece, like Embryons desséchés (Dried Embryos), has a poem attached to each movement. Furthermore, each of the three movements is dedicated to a composer. The compositional style extensively employs techniques such as quartal harmony and bitonality.
First Movement: "Pastoral Love Song"
The first movement, "Pastoral Love Song," features a poem that contrasts nature, centered around a stream, with the poet's own heart. The left hand maintains the exact same motif throughout, while the melody flows in the right hand. Satie himself indicated "legato" in the bass, expressing the flow of a stream as described in the poem. It evokes the sonorities of Debussy's piano works, such as his Préludes and the suite Miroirs (Mirrors), to which it is dedicated.
Second Movement: "Morning Song"
In the second movement, "Morning Song," an old poet plays a mandolin for his beloved. The arpeggios played by the right hand, which continue from beginning to end, seem to represent the plucked mandolin. The melody is sung in the bass.
Third Movement: "Meditation"
In the third movement, "Meditation," the exact same triplet motif in the right hand continues throughout the entire piece. The left hand's melody employs quartal and tertian intervals, resulting in a transparent sonority.
