Following the subject's presentation in the bass, the primary material is developed, centered on the lament motif. Subsequently, after the subject's presentation in the uppermost voice at measure 22, an interlude primarily featuring contrapuntal material commences. The subsequent subject presentation coincides with a clear C minor cadence at measure 31. In the latter half, while not a strict diminution of the subject, the lament motif is presented with shortened note values from measure 49. From measure 53, it appears urgently in three voices, and the chromatic line extends to its greatest length, intensifying the tension.
