Dedicated to the wife of the composer Bordes-Pène, a close friend of Fauré.
It is in D-flat major, 3/4 time. It begins Allegro moderato, gradually accelerating through un poco mosso and più mosso poco a poco. Then, in the section that transitions to C-sharp minor, its enharmonic parallel minor, the tempo becomes molto più lento. This section takes on a chorale-like sound, consisting of melody and chords, contrasting with the preceding musical character where eighth notes seemed to race across the keyboard. Subsequently, in the un poco più animato section, it returns to D-flat major. The piece is notable for its sudden modulations and unexpected harmonic resolutions.
