Profile
This is a highly energetic Courante. The key modulates from G minor to B-flat major, then to D minor, and finally back to G minor. Numerous harmonic sequences are introduced during these modulations. The piece is divided into two halves, and performers should first identify the peak points within each half. While the tension should gradually build towards these peaks, many of the harmonic sequences written in the piece are descending. For example, assuming the peak point of the first half is measure 23, the preceding harmonic sequence is also descending. Even if a sequence is descending, applying a crescendo is perfectly acceptable. Regardless of whether a sequence is ascending or descending, maintain the tension as you approach the peak points.
Although the piece is in a minor key and may convey a certain solemnity, it should never become heavy. It should maintain a degree of dignity, and may also incorporate elements of optimism and beauty. Vary the character and expression according to the key. As for the author's interpretation, G minor and D minor should be played strongly, especially D minor, while B-flat major should be played gently.
