A work from around 1898, when the composer was about 13 years old. Along with Barcarolle Op. 4, Butterflies Op. 6, Minuet Op. 7, Impromptu Op. 9(a), and Song Without Words Op. 10, it was published in 1902 by the Budapest publisher Harmonia as part of Six Piano Pieces (Sechs Klavierstücke). These early works clearly show the influence of Romantic composers such as Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, Grieg's Lyric Pieces, and short pieces by Tchaikovsky and Schumann. In all these pieces, Dora's clear, youthful, and fresh sensibility shines through a very simple and naive style.
This Song Without Words Op. 5 is also a bright and gentle piece, like morning light streaming into a room.
