"Ethno-logue" is a title meaning something like "ethnic tales." The concept for this work was derived from an ancient giant legend found in the Naka Ryakki (Abridged Record of Naka District) of the Hitachi-no-Kuni Fudoki (Records of the Customs and Land of Hitachi Province).
"12 ri (in ancient times, 12 ri = 60 chō ≈ 6.5 km) west of Hiratsu no Umaya (Hiratsu Post Station), there is a hill. Its name is Ōgushi. In ancient times, there was a person whose body was extremely large, who resided on the hill, whose hands reached the sea, and who ate umugi (giant clams). The shells eaten by the giant accumulated and became a hill (referring to the Ōgushi Shell Mound). At that time, it was called Ōkuchi, but now it is called Ōgushi Hill. The giant's footprints were over 30 ho (paces) long and over 20 ho wide, and the site of the hole dug by his urine was over 20 ho in diameter."
