This is a collection of four short pieces written for piano solo, each given a simple title based on tempo or form rather than a poetic one. Although not explicitly labeled "for children," these pieces are technically among the easier works by Hirayoshi and are frequently performed in children's competitions. However, musically they convey considerable complexity. Harmonically, while generally remaining within the bounds of tonal music, there are frequent modulations, and at times, atonal sonorities are incorporated, creating a somewhat floating sensation that makes them very challenging to bring together. The first piece, "Andante," features a melody imbued with Hirayoshi's characteristic warmth. The second piece, "Larghetto," is the most frequently performed among the four, with a sentimental melody intertwined with ever-changing harmonies and counter-melodies. The third piece, "Waltz," is the most technically demanding in the collection; its extensive use of dotted rhythms and syncopation makes it difficult to perceive its waltz character upon first listen. The fourth piece, "Adagietto," is a composition that employs contrapuntal techniques reminiscent of chamber music.
