The first edition was published around 1847 by C.F. Peters in Leipzig. Harmonies de la Nature is a collection of nine pieces depicting natural scenery. As the table of contents in the first edition only lists up to No. 9, it is presumed that the tenth piece, "Le Rossignol" (The Nightingale), was added later to complete the collection. The progression of the collection, starting with "L'Aurore" (Dawn), moving to No. 9 "Le Crépuscule" (Twilight), and concluding with No. 10 "Le Rossignol" (The Nightingale), suggests that it was conceived under a consistent concept. An excerpt from a poem is quoted at the beginning of each piece. Overall, rather than lyrical melodies, the pieces are characterized by the unadorned rigor and rhythmic, repetitive motifs that distinguish Lacombe's works.
