Histoires (Stories) Composed: 2011-2013
Before the Great East Japan Earthquake, and especially powerfully after it, Haruki Murakami advocated for 'the power of stories.' He spoke of the importance of being an 'unrealistic dreamer' and the necessity of creating a community with an open mind. These words provided significant inspiration for my composition.
This work, titled 'Histoires' (Stories), transforms ancient Japanese 'tales' such as those from Noh, Kabuki, and folk traditions, as well as the atmosphere from which stories emerge, into a musical piece from the composer's free perspective. It was premiered in 2013 at 'Kyoko Hirai Solo Exhibition IV,' performed by three pianists who shared the parts.
- Yukiwarashi (Snow Child)
- Fujin (Wind God)
- Shizukana Yuki (Quiet Snow)
- Dojoji
- Nemureru Shishi (Sleeping Lion Awakened by Two Butterflies) (from Shunkyo Kagami Jishi)
- Tsuru (Crane) (from Tsuru no Ongaeshi - The Crane's Return of a Favor)
These tales, deeply ingrained in the Japanese psyche, have transformed into piano music, once again entrusting the pride of Japanese culture. (Composer's Note)
