Arirang, a representative folk song of Korea. As one of the most widely known melodies, numerous musicians have competed to arrange it for piano. The version included here is an arrangement for piano solo by Jeon Gwon, widely beloved by enthusiasts.
The theme, beginning gently and evoking nostalgia, progresses through light and bouncy variations in the middle section, eventually ascending to a majestic "Arirang," leading the listener into ecstasy. While retaining its lingering resonance, it then returns to the peaceful tranquility of a quiet "Arirang."

Arirang, a representative Korean folk song, has been arranged by numerous musicians due to its widespread recognition. This collection features Jeong Gwon's arrangement, which is considered to be of the highest artistic merit. The rhythmic pattern employed is Jungmori Jangdan. In sections notated in 3/4 time, four measures are interpreted as a single phrase and adapted to 12/8 time. The piece commences with a gentle evocation of the melody. The nostalgic theme in the middle section is rendered through light, buoyant variations, utilizing the Jungmori Jangdan. It then gradually builds to a majestic and dignified rendition of "Arirang." While retaining its lingering resonance, the piece subsequently returns to the tranquility of a subdued "Arirang." This commentary is based on the notes from 'Piano Works Based on Korean Melodies' (Doremi Publishing, edited by Yang Seong-hwa).
