A song cycle based on the poetry collection by Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827). The original poetry collection was completed in the autumn of 1816, and after excerpts were published in magazines, a complete edition of 25 poems, including a prologue and epilogue, was published in 1821. In 1823, Schubert selected 20 of these poems and set them to music in the order of the collection.
The concept of a song cycle can be traced back to Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte (Op. 86), composed in 1816. However, Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin stands apart from preceding song collections in terms of scale, occupying a special place in the history of German Lieder as a precursor to large-scale song cycles based on a single poetry collection.
The protagonist of the poem is a young man undergoing training to become a miller. In Europe, since the Middle Ages, merchants and artisans organized guilds, and young people wishing to acquire a trade in commerce or industry had to train as apprentices under a master. Once a certain level of skill was recognized, they would travel from master to master as journeymen, and upon passing an examination to become a master, they could establish their own household. The poem narrates a love story from the perspective of this young man training at a mill, who falls in love with a beautiful maiden.
As mills use waterwheels to grind flour, the brook is inseparable from the work and plays a crucial role in the plot of the story. The protagonist first declares "Wandern" (Wandering) as the theme of the collection (No. 1), and led by his friend, the brook (No. 2), arrives at a certain mill (No. 3), where he meets a beautiful maiden (No. 4). Enamored with the maiden, the protagonist expresses his love, singing "Mein Herz ist dein" (My heart is yours) (No. 7) and "Die geliebte Müllerin ist mein" (The beloved miller-maid is mine) (No. 11). After depicting his own fluctuating emotions as he tries to gauge her feelings, the appearance of a hunter (No. 14) marks a turning point, and he learns that the maiden's heart belongs to the hunter (No. 15). The protagonist expresses his despair to the brook, and, drawn by the brook's lullaby, drowns himself, bringing the story to a close (No. 20).
