Composed to a poem by the Barcelona poet Tomàs Garcés (1901-1993). In B major, the piece is broadly in an ABA' form. Section A depicts the lively atmosphere of a festival and proceeds in 3/8 time. The accompaniment skillfully employs dynamics, disjunct chords, and close-position chords, corresponding to the content of the lyrics. Section B depicts the festival as night deepens and it gradually draws to a close, proceeding in 6/8 time. In contrast to Section A, this part is consistently tranquil and is characterized by chromatic progression and hemiola. Then, the opening part of A is repeated, ending while leaving the lingering impression of the festival. Notably, the slurs often used in the accompaniment, placed over a single note (or a single chord), are Mompou's unique way of using notation to indicate the resonance of the sound. By using this symbol, he sought to preserve the resonance of the sound to the maximum extent and encourage performers to be aware of the sound's resonance that emerges slightly after the moment of striking the key.
This work was orchestrated by Manuel Blancafort in 1948.
