Andante, G-flat major. 4/2 time.
Both the key and time signature are somewhat unusual, to the extent that they were changed to G major and 2/2 time in the first edition (later restored to the original in the late 19th-century complete edition). A very long-breathed melody is sung atop the rich texture woven by sextuplets.

No. 3: Andante, G-flat major, 4/2 time
This piece, bearing the tempo marking Andante, serves as the slow movement in a sonata. However, both the 4/2 time signature and the key of G-flat major (with six flats) were unusual for a “short piece” of the time; thus, in the first edition, they were changed to 2/2 time and G major for ease of performance. This also reveals the reasons why this collection was so difficult to be accepted.
Written in ternary form, the melody of the main section in G-flat major is spun from the dactylic (long-short-short) rhythm favored by Schubert. The middle section shifts to the parallel minor, E-flat minor. The middle section is given a contrasting character to the main section through its key, its fortissimo opening, and the urgent triplets in the left hand, yet continuity is maintained by the persistent accompaniment of sextuplets in the middle voice. And at the end of the middle section, a trill is placed in the low left hand (m. 53). This is a characteristic Schubertian technique, known from examples such as the Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D 960.
