Like the Four Preludes, Op. 31, this work was composed in Moscow in 1903 and published the following year. For more information on Scriabin during this period, please refer to the entry for Op. 31.
No. 1 in E major, 3/4 time
Written in a polyphonic style. Both the upper and lower voices are characterized by lines that incorporate leaps of a seventh.
No. 2 in F-sharp major, 6/8 time, Vagamente (dreamily)
The melody of this piece combines notes of various intervals. Considering the relationships between adjacent notes, the rubato indicated at the beginning would naturally emerge.
No. 3 in C major, 2/2 time
While based on a percussive touch, a supple, curvilinear descending figure is inserted about three times throughout the piece. It is a work where one can appreciate the interesting rhythmic qualities.
No. 4 in A-flat major, 5/4 time, Ardito, Bellicoso (boldly, bravely)
The main melody of this piece primarily consists of eighth notes, but the occasional triplets separated by sixteenth rests create a floating sonic texture. The right hand simultaneously plays chords supporting this main melody. Furthermore, the left hand features octaves with frequent leaps, requiring a high level of performance technique.
