This piece was composed in the year of Nordraak (1842–1866), an ardent Norwegian nationalist and composer of the Norwegian national anthem. Prior to this, Grieg had also dedicated his Humoresques, Op. 6 to Nordraak (See Humoresques, Op. 6). This funeral march, as Grieg wished, was performed at Grieg's own funeral.
Written in A minor, this work is characterized by bold harmonies and modulations, with the music progressing amidst tremolos and fanfares. An exception to the boldness of harmony and modulation is found in the middle section, which shifts to A major, the parallel major. This middle section concludes with a deceptive cadence. Subsequently, the opening section returns.
