Born and died in Bergen, Norway. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, and later became a pupil of the composer Niels Gade. While his early style strongly reflected the influence of German Romanticism, in later years he increasingly embraced the so-called 'National Romantic' tendency, Ibsen, leaving behind many works that dealt with his country's heroes, folk songs, and landscapes, including the incidental music for Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt'.His 'Piano Concerto in A minor' has become one of the major repertoires in this genre, and his piano work 'Lyric Pieces' is also widely performed and cherished.
