Composed in 1872, this is a collection consisting of three pieces. The first edition, published by Horneman in Denmark, bears the subtitle "Humoresques for Piano" (see Humoresques, Op. 6).
I. Mountain Tune
The first piece, "Mountain Tune," is structured with changing tempos: un poco allegro → tranquillo → presto. It begins with open fifths. The theme, initially presented in unison by both hands, is subsequently doubled in octaves. In the tranquillo section, a melody is sung in the middle voice, repeating the same melodic figure over arpeggiated chords in the left hand. Subsequently, this melody is treated in a canonic manner. After the return of the opening unison, the piece enters a coda, developing the presto section before concluding.
II. A Wedding Procession Passes By
The second piece, "A Wedding Procession Passes By," depicts, as its title suggests, a wedding procession approaching from a distance and then receding. The melody is adorned with ornaments, creating a serene and festive atmosphere.
III. From the Carnival
In the third piece, "From the Carnival," a passage reminiscent of "A Wedding Procession Passes By," which precedes this piece, can be heard midway through. It is a virtuosic finale.
