Composed around the early 20th century, when Granados was in his mid-thirties. It is dedicated to a woman named Maria Olivero. This collection bears the subtitle "Mazurka," which is also the title of its first piece. Furthermore, a four-bar musical excerpt is appended as a "motto."
The entire collection consists of six short pieces.
Mazurka
Written in ternary form. The end of this mazurka is accompanied by a piano recitative. The mazurka section is in Poco Lento, B-flat minor, and 3/4 time. The recitative section is Lento. This part is constructed almost as a single line, yet it is rich in undulations.
Lullaby
Lento, C-sharp minor, 6/8 time. The atmosphere shifts dramatically from the mazurka and subsequent recitative, brimming with brightness. Nevertheless, even in this piece, a sense of depth is palpable in the Gregorian chant-like middle section.
Untitled
This Lento piece is accompanied by the instruction "slowly, ecstatically." Granados reportedly called this piece, written in G major and 3/4 time, "The Poet and the Nightingale."
Allegretto
G major, 3/4 time. Although not indicated in the title, this piece possesses a character similar to the Mazurka, which is also the first piece in this collection. In this piece, there is a middle voice that responds to the melody in B-flat major.
Allegro Appassionato
E-flat minor, 4/4 time. The instruction is "fast, passionately." This piece is written in the most pianistic style within the collection. In the latter half, the principal themes heard in preceding pieces are transformed and reappear.
Epilogue
Andantino spianato, E-flat major, 3/4 time. The instruction is "with poetic exaltation." It is written with a clear texture: a sweet and beautiful melody in the right hand supported by arpeggios in the left hand. This piece serves to refreshingly resolve the dramatic character of the preceding piece.
