This is an arrangement by Milhaud himself for piano four-hands of his 1920 song cycle "Trois Poèmes de Jean Cocteau," Op. 59 (dedicated to Satie). It was edited and fingered by Marguerite Long and published in 1928. For more on the relationship between Long and Milhaud, please refer to my previous essay on Promenades (Op. 162). Cocteau's poems, which take fairs and flea markets as their subject matter, are not particularly intended for children. However, it is likely that the work was retitled "Enfantines" due to its approachable melodies and technical simplicity. It is also known by Japanese titles such as "Kodomotachi" (Children) or "Kodomorashisa" (Childishness). The unique, fresh sound is created by exquisitely intertwining polytonality and polyrhythm with clear, diatonic melodies. It is literally suitable for a wide range of uses, from children's recitals to professional concerts.
