Articulation
While the first movement tends to be optimistic, there are challenges that need to be considered. First, let's discuss articulation. Many performers, when playing the right hand's F-E-E in measure 4, follow the slur indicated in almost all editions, connecting F-E legato, then releasing the note at E before playing the next E. This is acceptable, but what about measures 1-3? Many performers connect the entire right hand in measures 1-3 with legato. While it might seem permissible to use the pedal here (given that the bass is F and there are no non-harmonic tones in measures 1-3), using the pedal would further lead to disregarding the articulation written there.
Specifically:
- In measure 1, a slur is placed from F to A, and it is desirable to release the note at A.
- In measure 2, a slur is placed from C to A, and it is desirable to release the note at A.
- In measure 3, a slur is placed from B to G, and it is desirable to release the note at G (considering it like bowing on a violin, etc.).
However, many performers disregard the articulation written here.
While this is the author's personal opinion, it is requested that the articulation written here be observed.
Consequently, for example, the slur placed over the right-hand octave in measure 185 also makes it desirable to release the note at A, but it cannot be played smoothly without using the pedal. Therefore, change the pedal on each beat. And perform so that three units are created within one measure.
