Second Movement
B-flat major, 4/4 time
A slow movement in two-part form with two themes, one in the tonic and one in the dominant. In the latter part (m. 21), both themes appear in the tonic, bringing the movement to a close.
It should be noted that the latter part differs significantly between Mozart's autograph manuscript and Artaria's first edition, leading the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe (New Mozart Edition) to include both versions. This difference lies in the fact that while the first edition features elaborate ornamentation in detail, the autograph manuscript contains almost no such ornamentation. Although it was common practice in performance conventions of the time to improvise variations when repeating the same musical idea, it is interesting that Mozart chose to publish one aspect of such ornamentation in printed score.

This is the second movement of the Aria. Pay attention to balance, ensuring the left hand does not become too loud. Use the pedal or finger pedal to sustain the bass notes. If the right hand becomes muddy and the pedal cannot be sustained, use the finger pedal, keeping the left hand's fifth finger on the key. This method helps prevent the bass from being interrupted.
Another important tip concerns the right hand in measures 1-2, which contain the theme. Ornaments are written, and many performers align the first note of the right-hand ornament with the second 16th note of the left hand. Taking measure 1, beat 2 as an example:
- First, align D with the left-hand B.
- Next, align the right-hand E-flat with the left-hand F.
- Play a triplet-like rhythm here.
- Align the last note of the ornament, D, with the left-hand D.
- Finally, align the right-hand E-flat with the left-hand F.
While this approach is acceptable, it can sometimes lead to mechanical playing. As a tip, consider this second movement as a Romantic piece and apply some rubato to avoid a mechanical performance. When doing so, taking measure 1 as an example, after playing the first note D on beat 2, pause slightly before starting the ornament. The same applies to measure 2. By introducing a slight pause (a very brief one), the playing becomes more vocal and avoids a mechanical feel.
