Minuet: Allegro vivace, A minor, 3/4 time
This movement is written in a texture that can be interpreted either as a minuet in 3/4 time or as a scherzo, counted as one beat per measure at a slightly faster tempo.
The main section adopts a ternary form, ABA'. The 16-measure A section possesses a classical structure, beginning with an 8-measure theme statement, followed by a 4-measure hemiola, and concluding with a 4-measure half-cadence. In the B section, after voice exchange and modulation are employed to paraphrase the A section, the A section returns with tonal deviations and closes in the tonic key.
In stark contrast to the forceful and crisp main section in the minor key, the Trio begins quietly in the parallel major. Although the main section and the Trio section possess contrasting characters, they are constructed using the same rhythmic material as the main section, including not only quarter-note accompaniment but also melodies composed of eighth notes and quarter notes.
Furthermore, an alternative version of this movement exists (D 277A). Although this autograph manuscript does not indicate a composition date and features a different Trio in F major, it is considered to be part of the compositional process for this movement.
