Mompou had spent nearly ten years unable to compose due to a series of unfortunate events, including the Spanish Civil War, the outbreak of World War II, and personal tragedies. However, in 1941, he returned to his hometown Barcelona from Paris and was able to resume active creative work. Landscapes (Paisajes) was composed in 1942. It consists of three pieces in total, with the first and second pieces grouped as Volume I, and the third piece as Volume II.
1. "La fuente y la campana" (The Fountain and the Bell)
No key signature, 2/4 time. This piece nostalgically depicts the fountain in Mompou's garden and the sound of the bells heard there. The bell, represented by G, is struck repeatedly in the bass, gently enveloping the air. The interval of a tenth appears here. The subsequent sixteenth notes are played like gushing water, creating a beautiful, transparent sound. This piece is dedicated to Carmen Bravo, who would later become Mompou's wife.
2. "El lago" (The Lake)
No key signature is indicated. 4/4 time. The sound of the sixteenth notes is extremely delicate, evoking the tranquil atmosphere of a lake. Within this, a long-breathed melody emerges and sings. The notes released in a quasi-cadenza seem to create ripples spreading across the water's surface, forming the subsequent thirty-second note figures. This piece is interesting for its Impressionistic depiction.
3. "Carros de Galicia" (Galician Carts)
No key signature. 2/4 time, Lento. Composed inspired by a Galician song sung by a wanderer. From the beginning, dissonances are strung together, making the tonality more ambiguous. The same chords are repeated at a subdued volume, increasing the sense of unease. Maintain tension and play with a stable center of gravity.
