This first movement is particularly striking for its beauty among Haydn's works. Haydn's characteristic humor is not evident in this movement. In this first movement, ornamental notes are crucial. Set the tempo to Moderato, and for example, execute the trill in the right hand at measure 31 lightly, swiftly, effortlessly, and without undue force.
A key point to observe in this first movement is the distinction between non-harmonic tones and harmonic tones. The performer must identify non-harmonic tones and differentiate their volume from harmonic tones; if treated with the same volume, the music will sound very stiff. Emphasize the non-harmonic tones and play the harmonic tones so they seem to recede.
For instance, the D in the right hand at measure 7, beat 3; the E-flat in the right hand at measure 8, beat 3; and the F in the right hand at measure 9, beat 3, are all 'passing tones'. Passing tones typically occur on weak beats and are used to smooth the flow. However, as in these examples, when they appear on strong beats, they must be emphasized to some extent, representing a high-tension usage for a passing tone. Consequently, the note following these passing tones is a harmonic tone and a resolution, so its volume should be reduced compared to the non-harmonic tone.
Please pay careful attention to the treatment of such non-harmonic and harmonic tones.
