Composed in 1766. It was published in 1788 along with Hob.XVI: 44 and 46. In this year, Haydn was promoted to Kapellmeister for the Esterházy princely family, marking the beginning of his creative period known as "Sturm und Drang."
The work consists of three movements, all in sonata form. The absence of a minuet movement, which was present in earlier works, is characteristic of this period.
First Movement: Moderato, E-flat major, 4/4 time. Sonata form.
The themes consist of a first theme centered on an interplay between the left and right hands, and a homophonic second theme with an Alberti bass in the left hand. This accompaniment pattern prominently appears in the development section, driving the movement forward at a good tempo.
Second Movement: Andante, A-flat major, 3/4 time. Sonata form.
A relatively calm slow movement. It possesses a well-balanced structure and rich content.
Third Movement: Finale. Allegro di molto, E-flat major, 3/4 time. Sonata form.
A fast movement characterized by prominent toccata-like figures. While there are many bustling passages of sixteenth notes, the eighth notes of the first theme and the repeated notes of the second theme lend a certain weight to the movement. The final chord becomes Adagio, bringing the work to a calm close.
