Third Movement Overview
This is the third movement, characterized by strong instrumental elements. Haydn's unique humorous side can also be observed. While fundamentally an optimistic movement, remember to express its beauty as well.
Performance Notes
Pedaling
A point of caution is not to overuse the pedal. As there are many scales, excessive use of the pedal will result in muddiness. Keep pedal usage to a minimum.
Tempo
Although marked Allegro molto, consider the fastest tempo at which repeated notes can be played cleanly with staccato.
Form
The form is ABA, and the vicinity of measures 76-80 in the B section should be considered the peak point of highest tension.
Suspensions
There are many suspensions (e.g., measures 62-67) throughout the piece. Accentuate the non-harmonic tones of the suspensions, and for the subsequent resolution notes, release tension and play them softer than the suspensions.
Ending
An interesting aspect of this third movement is that only the final measure is marked Adagio. It is likely more logical to gradually slow down from two measures before the Adagio, rather than abruptly transitioning to Adagio from that measure, to enter the Adagio naturally.
