This second movement features two main themes, which are developed through variations. Simply put, there are two characters, one in a major key and one in a minor key, which alternate throughout the piece. The minor sections are by no means somber; the entire piece can be approached with an optimistic mindset.
It is crucial for the performer to understand:
- Which theme each written variation belongs to.
- Which specific part of the theme is being varied.
For instance, recognize that the major section beginning at measure 34, beat 2, is a variation of measures 1-8. Furthermore, by employing the exact same dynamics and tone quality as in measures 1-8, the piece becomes clearer.
Alternatively, consider that while the theme in measure 1 is in A major, the same theme appears in E major at measure 5, and in B minor (temporarily) at measure 9. Therefore, these three thematic statements should be performed with differing expressions and dynamics.
The entire piece contains dramatic elements. It can also be conceived as a conversation between two individuals, speaking alternately.
