This first movement, reminiscent of rondo form, also incorporates elements of variation. The theme spans from the anacrusis to the first beat of the second measure. Although the original key is G major, this theme is later performed in other keys (whether one perceives them as modulations or not), such as D major, A minor, G minor, C minor, and D minor. Throughout, the key of G major consistently returns at intervals, providing a sense of relief. Naturally, as each section is played in a different key, it should be performed with an expression appropriate to that key and its harmony.
Another characteristic of this first movement is its use of canonic technique. This creates an interplay of themes, much like a call and response. One might imagine it as a lively scene on a stage where, as one singer begins to sing a theme, another person interjects before the theme concludes, and then another interjects as that person begins to sing. There are several such passages.
Essentially, consider this movement a small, optimistic, and lively theatrical scene on a stage.
