This second movement can be imagined as operatic music, such as an opera, or solely as orchestral music. It features chromatic progressions and many dramatic sections. If measures 1-23, up to the repeat marking, are considered the A section, this section contains numerous rests, allowing phrases to conclude distinctly. For instance, the rest on the third beat of measure 1, the rest on the third beat of measure 2, the rest between the second and third beats of measure 5, and the interruption of the left-hand 3-tuplets by a rest in measure 11, all contribute to maintaining a sense of calm.
However, this changes from measure 24 onwards, with the commencement of the B section. Numerous 3-tuplets are written, to the extent that they become the predominant note value, creating an unceasing increase in tension that persists until the fermata in measure 48. The value of this second movement is determined by how intensely and dramatically the B section is performed.
Throughout the movement, a distinctive descending passage in 3rds, reminiscent of a 2-part duet, provides a sense of mental calm and reassurance whenever it appears. Consider this an expression of joy, and strive to perform it beautifully and expressively, as if singing.
