This infinitely beautiful second movement can be regarded as an aria filled with sorrow. While Larghetto is generally considered slightly faster than Largo, the melodic line of this movement frequently features 32nd notes. If this were considered a vocal line, I believe it would be appropriate to set a tempo where even singing the 32nd notes would not feel too fast. Recordings with a considerably slower tempo are uploaded in this piano encyclopedia, yet they do not feel out of place at all; rather, they sound gorgeous.
Performers might consider the distribution between the vocal and orchestral parts. For instance, imagine a soprano singer performing the first two measures. Following that, from the anacrusis at the end of the second measure, the orchestra plays forte for measures 3-4, and then the soprano singer performs again for measures 5-6 – such a scenario could be considered. Such a contrast could be effectively created.
The overall mood of the piece conveys deep sorrow and profound emotion, yet beauty coexists within it. Since augmented sixth chords (German 6/5) also appear, try to play them dramatically.
