Completed in 1919, this work was premiered the following year in New York by Rubinstein. Its publication took place later, in 1922.
Albéniz and Granados, Falla, who built the pinnacle of Spanish nationalism, is perhaps better known as a composer of ballet music rather than piano works. It is through this work that Falla sought to convey Andalusia using expressions unique to the piano. Incidentally, "Bética" is the name for Andalusia dating back to ancient Roman times. Reflecting on ancient Andalusia, Falla spelled the original title in Latin.
The entire work is written in a three-part "ABA'" form with a coda. Section A is in Allegro moderato, 3/4 time, based on the Phrygian mode. It begins with clusters of notes concentrated within a very narrow interval. From there, the left hand brings out minor thirds with sharp articulation. This music is then varied in diverse ways, incorporating arpeggios, glissandos, and arabesque-like passages. The subsequent Section B is an Andantino intermezzo. In this section, the time signature changes to 3/8. Despite such changes, a common element with Section A can be observed in the shared minor third interval. Furthermore, in this section, the right hand consistently emphasizes syncopation against the left hand. However, such rhythmic displacement, given the character of this section, creates a dreamy atmosphere rather than a clear distinction. From A' onwards, the music progresses vigorously with abundant forward momentum until the conclusion of the entire work, bringing the piece to a close.
