Born in Cadiz in 1876, he was a pianist and composer. In 1890, he studied piano with José Tragó in Madrid. Later, he entered the Madrid Conservatory and achieved excellent results. He studied composition with Felipe Pedrell and learned about Spanish folk music. From 1907, he moved to Paris, where he formed friendships with Debussy, Ravel, and Dukas, and was influenced by their Impressionism. His representative works include the symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, composed between 1911 and 1915, and the ballets El amor brujo and The Three-Cornered Hat. His style skillfully blends Spanish nationalism and Impressionism, and his compositions were influenced by Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic colors. Around 1921, he began working on chamber operas and the Harpsichord Concerto. These works are recognized as showing the influence of Stravinsky's Neoclassicism.
